Sumario: In power transmission systems is necessary control and monitoring the parameters of the power grid, for which they are implementing smart grids. These units Phasor measurement systems PMU's allow a better observability of power system by the current and voltage parameters the phasor measurement in real time stamp, providing new possibilities for analysis and control of electric transmission systems. The PMU's location in all transmission system bus is economically unviable therefore need to optimize its location giving you an observability of the system with the least number of PMU's depending on the system being controlled. This paper proposes the optimal PMU's location in transmission systems, for it describes and applies a couple of methods in order to determine the phasor measurement unit optimal placement in the power transmission system. The problem is posed in seeking maximum observability of the transmission system with the minimum equipment, which is solved using a mathematical lineal integer programming model and Greedy heuristic model developed with a mathematic software algorithm so that is observed and compared these two methods on the 230 kV Ecuador national transmission system.
