Sumario: This article highlights the successes of the Asociación de Tecnólogos y Productores de Bilbao, ASOTBILBAO. This organization was founded in 2011 by a group of coffee growers in the municipality of Planadas, in the south of the Tolima region. What allowed this organization to progress and generate local development, eventually improving the quality of life of its members? In addition to personal resources, public investment, and the fact that the association permitted its members to satisfy their needs, trust, the majority of the organization's leaders have been able to gain vocational training in agro-business, thereby increasing the association's visibility among others in the region. Common goals inform the associative approach, which is essential for this kind of organizations and social capital, indispensable for entrepreneurship, informed by the existence of norms or institutions that allow cooperation and reinforce the acquired commitments. The research background is oriented toward an inquiry about the protagonism of associations in local development and the acquisition of strategies to attain it, the importance of social capital for productivity, cooperation and sustainability, and to the relationship between associativity, social capital and innovation.
