Sumario: This paper exposes some experiences and considerations concerning Cartagena de Indias and La Habana, two important urban complexes located in the geographical area of the Caribbean; and from very early in the XVII century had been closely related since the historical and economic fact that both constituted forced scale points in the journey towards the Metropolis of the Galleons Fleets that carried from Spanish territories in the New World the extracted wealth of those lands. The Hispanic origin and the permanency of this common root as much in Cuba as in Colombia during more than three centuries of colonization, started to gestate and develop aspects that at the present time remain as testimonial elements of this common origin. The strategic importance of the Caribbean as the forced entrance and exit towards the whole of the continent, converted this area in a neuralgic conflict one among the different powers that tried to domain the seas. It was also very important for the Spaniards that resolve to maintain their domain and military control of this area, they developed a regional defensive system for their protection, building a remarkable group of fortifications in insular and continental lands.
