During the settlement process of the jesuitic-guarani missions in the XVII century seven reductions were founded in the Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil) and just four of them show visible remains nowadays. Because of the decay of the reduccional system by the end of the XVIII century, the missionary towns were abandoned and their architecture fell into ruin. The first preservation work of the National Historical Artistic Patrimony Institute was done on the remains of São Miguel Arcanjo from 1938. Over a long period of time they concentrated exclusively on this site and just in 1970 the archeological sites of São João Batista, São Lourenço Martir and São Nicolau were declared national patrimony. From the 90s began the development of the project "Protection and Valorization of Cultural Patrimony of the Jesuit Missioners of the Guarani", and from 2003 they have been working on the São João Batista and São Lourenço Martir sites with a multidiscipline team integrated by specialists in architecture, restoration, historic investigation, archaeology and environment. This is a new experience in this field. The main idea of this work is to enhance the appreciation of the missionary vestiges by recovering their historic documents and their architectonic and archaeological structures in order to understand and recuperate the way space was distributed. |
