Sumario: Despite the boom in corporate social responsibility, we still can't answer the question as to whether it helps to maximise corporate profits, and whether it generates the positive social and environmental impact which its promoters claim. The author discusses these questions, and argument that corporate social responsibility has the potential to promote development and to broaden the range of civic guarantees that determine the conditions of life of the individual. He briefly examines the institutional conditions required to materialize this potential and the decisive role that social organizations and the media may play. He suggests a research agenda to win a greater understanding of corporate social responsibility in Colombia and its real contribution to the strengthening of citizenship.
