Objective: To identify the implications and trends of genetics and genomics into the practice of nursing. Methodology: Integrative review between May and July 2013. Search and analysis of the literature on Science Direct database that included articles, reviews and editorials on genetics, genomics and nursing descriptors, published between 1993 and 2013.1056 pieces were found that related nursing and genetics, and 127 associated these three descriptors. 57 were selected for their contribution to the understanding of the relevance of the subject area within the practice of nursing. Results: The chronological analysis of selected references shows the impact of genetics and genomics in nursing practice, visible in different areas including: (1) research practice in nursing, (2) advocating for patients who experience genetic testing, (3) education to strengthen nursing skills, (4) ethical and legal issues, (5) public policy, and (6) the role of genetics in the clinic. Conclusions: In the last 20 years, there is a significant proliferation of the subject of genetics in nursing, especially a greater interest in it, as well as genomics from the discovery of the human genome. Despite the interest and recognition of the importance of the topic of genetics and genomics and their implications for education, practice and research in nursing, the theoretical development is still nascent. |
