Sumario: This article analyzes the role played by the three times president of the republic, Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno, in the reform of the Costa Rica’s electoral system. This process, fundamental in reinforcing the position of the electorate as opposed to the parties and the authorities of government, contributed to the democratization of Costa Rican politics between 1900 and 1940.
