This work deals with the construction of identityrepresentations of the nation woven in theimage of the popular Argentinian saint GauchoAntonio Gil. This figure configured itselfin the national imaginary as one symbolsmost filled with the popular Argentinian religiousness.Many scholars have even come toconsider the image as a symbol of all thingsArgentinian, and its meaning to go beyondthe religious context. Thus, this reflection enquiresinto the memories that built this figureand some of the expansion trajectories of devotion.Likewise, it analyzes how this icon updatesand recreates myths, foundation of thenational identity, and alternate representationschemes from multiple appropriation processes.The information used in this text comesfrom three field works carried out in January2010, 2011, and 2012, during the Gaucho Gilfestivities in Mercedes, Corrientes; additionalto the analysis of images and several differentcirculating documents. |
