Sumario: Objective: To describe the prevalence of suicide in adolescents from Quindio in the period 1989-2008.Methodology:A quantitative, descriptive, and longitudinal research. The suicide figures were supplied by the Instituto Seccional de Salud del Quindio (ISSQ) and rates were performed using population projections by the Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadistica (DANE). Results: In total, there were 115 suicides among adolescents (29.6 % in women and 70.4 % in men). The preferred method was hanging (39 %), followed by poisoning (35 %), and firearms (25 %). The rate for the 20-year study was 6.1/100.000 inhabitants. In the last, five female suicide at a rate of 7.2 was higher than among men who registered 6.6.Conclusion: The disturbing increase in the last 10 years, especially in women, so it is urgent to work on prevention and intervention programs.
