This article aims at exploring what it means for a high school student of the Aguablanca District, a disadvantaged urban area of Cali, Colombia, to make the effort of successfully finishing his high school education, from the framework of risk and resilience. For the purpose of this study, a semi-structured interview was carried out to identify risk factors to which the student has been exposed to, as well as protective factors that might have helped him to continue his education. The results of this study shows that the main risk factors included exposure to violence, gangs, invisible borders, and illegal drugs. The main protective factors identified were associated with the presence of positive significant adults at home and at school. These results highlight the importance of establishing positive relationships that facilitate the development of resilient behaviors in adolescents. |
