Sumario: The purpose of this study was to analyze ethics as a guideline for decision making in universities, based on authors such as Cortina (2005) and Daft (2004), among others. The methodology applied was qualitative. The key informants were 6 officers of Universidad de La Guajira, in Colombia, and Universidad Nacional Experimental de la Fuerza Armada, in Venezuela. The data collection instrument used in this study was a semi-structured interview. The results showed that these universities state values, principles and norms in their formal documents; however, some make use of disvalues. This leads to dilemmas when making decisions. Finally, it can be said that public universities take ethics into account as a guideline for decision making.
