Sumario: Objective: To design and validate an instrument for assessing activity limitations and participation restrictions of elderly people, with reference to the CIF. Materials and methods: Type of study: evaluative. Sample: A group of experts was selected in order to validate content and appearance. For reliability tests, 278 evaluations were made to 40 elderly. Techniques and procedures: Some experts selected the most relevant items for the elderly, based on the short list of the CIF. For reliability testing, the instrument was administered by five trained testers. Analysis: A database was developed in EPI INFO and concordance tests were performed in EPI DATA. Results: Forty-seven items were selected. The reliability tests showed Kappa values exceeding 0.40 in most items. Conclusion: The instrument reached the levels of validity and reliability expected, except for certain items of Chapters II, VI, and VIII. It is necessary to use it in the long-term and at a higher level in order to assess its applicability and standard predictive value to any geriatric population.
