Sumario: It is shown the way small and medium-sized enterprises in Ibagué conduct the strategic management process as part of the confrontation between the empirical application of this process and the existing theoretical model. For the above, the database of Cámara de Comercio de Ibagué was used and by questionnaire 53 companies from Ibagué were inquired into the tools and matrices used for this phase. The results show low implementation of the strategic process in each of its stages: in the strategic diagnosis, the most used tools are SWOT analysis, analysis of the five forces and auditing resources (58.5 %, 54.7 % and 41.5 %, respectively); in strategic platform there is an increased use of mission, vision and objectives (94.3 %, 94.3 % and 84.9 %, respectively). The found status is based on the empirical management that takes place in these businesses. This leads to recommend a systematic process of training on SMEoriented strategy, and as for the research activity pose similar projects in other regions and businesses of different sizes.
