Sumario: The substitution of fossil fuel for one of biological origin, has become one of the great challenges for Colombia and the whole world, becoming a viable alternative the production and use of biofuels, because these do not increase the emissions of CO2 and other gaseous emissions that pollute the atmosphere, as opposed to diesel of fossil origin which negatively impacts the environment and human health. The purpose of this article is to make an analysis of the prospective of the African palm production chain to obtain biodiesel in Colombia and its environmental impact. Therefore, a type of documentary research was proposed, which consists in extracting, compiling, organizing and synthesizing the relevant information of the subject, in order to disseminate a reference material. The results show that although biodiesel is a viable alternative to contribute to the environment, it has advantages and disadvantages for its production, in terms of road infrastructure, environmental regulations, biofuel blends policy with fossil fuels, skilled labor, technologies, among others.
