Sumario: This article aims to highlight the importance of human capital as a strategic factor for the competitive development of companies in the hotel sector in Cartagena; starting from the description of the human profile that is performed in the hotel sector of Cartagena based on the occupational profiles of some of the institutions that offer the hotel and tourism program in the city, as well as identifying the relationship of human capital with development competitive sector of the hotel sector and then formulate capital qualification strategies with the competitive development of the hotel sector of the city, understanding the human resource as a fundamental element for the competitive development of the business. The applied methodology for the development of the review article corresponds to a documentary research, qualitative research techniques are implemented, such as content analysis, to answer the research´s question referred to in this article. Cartagena is analyzed as a national and international tourist destination in high demand, for this reason the strategies that are generated should be aimed atstrengthening human resources, so that they are highly trained to meet the needs of a market in constant change
