Objective: To assess the antimicrobial effect of two different mixes of calcium hydroxide: with propylenglycol and with chlorhexidine gluconate on Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC29212).Material and methods: Through an experimental in vitro study two agents were tested: pure calcium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide with 13% chlorhexidine gluconate, and calcium hydroxide with propylenglycol. E. faecalis dilutions at 1.5 x 10-7 and 1.5 x 10-8 in soy trypticase were used, to which 100 mg. of each agent were added. They were cultured in Agar Mueller Hinton medium at these intervals: 1, 20, 60, 80, and 120 minutes in direct contact with E. Faecalis strain. They were then incubated at 37° Centigrades, to observe Colony Forming Units (CFU) at 24, 48, and 72 hours. Culture readings were conducted under supervision of one sole operator. Results: Some CFU's were found after one minute of direct contact between microorganism and pure calcium hydroxide, in contrast with other study groups whose CFU readings were zero after one-minute contact. Chlorhexidine gluconate used at 13% showed a better performance; however, results showed no statistically significant differences. |
