Ecuador has a lot of rituals that show its cultural richness. One of the most popular
traditions is the Inti Raymi, Inca millennial celebration where the main objective is
tanks to the Sun (Inti Taita), heat and light provided to crops.
This festival is celebrated in Cayambe hundreds of years ago by Kayambis people,
but the popularity of Inti Raymi has been increasing, and now the ritual in honor of
the Sun God is not celebrated by kayambis (Indians) but also by mestizos (half
blood).
In their appearances both, indigenes and mestizos allude to thank the Sun, the
difference is that this same representation takes a different meaning for those
involved. The indigenous population of Cayambe appropriates tradition through
music and dance, every implement used is related to its history, rituals and customs.
Mestizos play the role of the characters that emerge every June in the streets of
Cayambe, for them the Inti Raymi has a different value because they ignore the
ancestral knowledge of the Kayambi people.
This text help to support the differences between indigenes and mestizos
representation of the Inti Raymi, which are shown in the photo book Inti Raymi, the
two sides of the ritual, in order to know the ritual and viewed from two perspectives
that do the same, but they are not equal. |
