Currently, large companies / factories, including El Camal, Industrial Park and Ambato Landfill have a WWTP, but these do not comply with the MPL of the current legislation. These entities discharge their waters towards the Chasinato stream, which flows into the Cutuchi River and later joins the Pastaza River. These waters, with high concentrations of pollutant load, high COD and low BOD5 (Méndez, García, Castillo, & Sauri, 2010, pp. 80-81) and advanced oxidation process. The oxidation processes, often called AOP, are those tertiary treatments that are based on the generation of the strongly oxidized products, whose main purpose is the elimination of soluble, non-biodegradable compounds present in the wastewater. Such processes use oxidants (chemicals) to reduce BOD5 / COD levels, and separate the organic components and the inorganic oxidizable components. The processes can completely oxidize organic materials as phenolic compounds. The mechanics of the process contemplates the mixing of the ferrous sulfate, hydrogen peroxide and as chelating agent, citric acid in proportions of 1 and 5 in a stirring equipment (jar test) at 100 RPM for 30 minutes. Soon after the sedimentation process takes place for 20 minutes and the soluble COD and BOD5 concentration is measured.
The outcome obtained from this biodegradability results in a BOD5 / COD value of 0.22 to 0.59. This process is efficient to treat wastewater as a pretreatment with fenton, followed by a biological treatment. |
