This research analyzes and compares several elements of the journalistic discourse in three
American newspapers from Texas: The Dallas Morning News, The Tyler Morning Telegraph
and La Voz de Houston, with the purpose of demonstrate the hispanic immigrant´s image
exposed in these newspapers during the first year of Barack Obama’s second period. Throughout
the research, this work briefly mentions the generalities of communication and mass media, as
well as, the global concept of migration and a short review about immigration in the United
States.
The concepts and research methods are mainly based on Teun van Dijk’s techniques and
theory, Van Dijk is an expert on linguistics, discourse analysis and studies of racism in language.
This work has a connection with different categories of analysis outlined by Professor Antonio
Hernández Bañón in his critical discourse analysis of media and emigrated people.
The classification of the material is divided into two major categories, Information for or
about immigrants and The immigrant as protagonist. Within these groups there are several
macrostructures according to the main subject matter of each article. This work also includes a
comparison of the news’ actors and agents, as well as the classification of the writers and
journalists who built the discourse. |
