This paper discusses the study and design of an Integrated Management System for
solid waste generated daily in the south campus of Universidad Politécnica
Salesiana, based on a thorough study of the characteristics of the collection system
and temporary storage that is currently running, including: containers and clean
points, collection routes, collection performance and journey times, among others.
To begin, the baseline was established with the determination of the influence areas
of the campus, physical, meteorological, biological and socio-economic
characteristics of the settling area. The calculation of the population projection of 10
years, until 2023, since it’s the minimum time for which the design of the system of
Solid Waste Management (SGIRS, by its spanish acronym) was necessary. The
design of two containers, one for recyclable waste and one for common waste was
chosen, defining its location in classrooms, offices, outdoor, cafeteria and library
according to traffic areas and densities of the generated waste.
Subsequently collection subsectors were redefined to maximize collection efficiency,
which make the journey from the warehouses to complete the process of daily
collection in the temporary storage site for every solid waste. And in the end, the
respective socialization activities and diffusion of what would become the new
management system, as well as preparing the respective trainings for the whole
university population. |
