The Church of the Diocese of Riobamba, beginning in the decade of the 1960’s,
made a preferential option for the poor, especially the indigenous people. To do that,
it was supported by the International, Latin American and local documents of the
Church. Several theologians also have oriented the rise and strengthening of an
indigenous Church with a face of its own with their reflections.
In the decade from 2000 until 2010, the Indigenous Pastoral Ministry has had several
problems: lack of coordination between the Vicariate for Indigenous Pastoral
Ministry and other pastoral ministries, volunteers and pastoral agents; less interest
and support for strengthening a Church with an indigenous identity on the part of
pastors in the parishes. The more volunteers have promoted sacramentalization, new
pastoral agents are not interested in learning the language or understanding the
indigenous spirituality, which makes it difficult to strengthen the indigenous Church. |
