Sumario: The present study analyzes the change of the modality of Free Trade Zones to Special Development Economic Zones. Additionally it has an analysis of the different theoretical models of competitiveness, in this way it also attempts to connect the benefits of each model to the Special Development Economic Zones framework to know the competitive advantages that these Zones will provide to Ecuador. This study explains in a general form the importance of investing in research and development, where the technology is one of the key pieces to the change in the productive matrix of the country. Of various qualifiers that evaluate the competitiveness situation of nations, this study focused its analysis to the competitiveness index issued by the World Economic Forum. It will also be complemented with a field research realized for the present study directed to governmental entities, in order to have a clearer point of view about of the competitive environment of Ecuador. Finally according to the collected material it will emit the respective conclusions, identify the problems and also the opportunities, which our country has, through the Special Development Economic Zones of technology, and explain how they can promote the productive and intellectual capacities, to create competitive advantages for the country.
