This document is the result of the ethnographic work carried out to identify the discrimination and social exclusion that young Colombian refugees, men and women living in Quito, suffer. It explains the impact of this discrimination and exclusion in their socio-cultural integration and fulfillment of their right to the higher level education. This analysis is presented as a contribution to the study of urban cultures from an anthropological approach, by using as basis a focus group of twenty young refugees during their preparation for the entrance examination to the public university in Ecuador (July 2016). The exchange and feedback from these young refugees and their families enabled the identification of the most relevant aspects that arise as part of the integration and adaptation processes of refugee families in vulnerable conditions, who have been victims of the more than 50-year long civil war in Colombia. This work is presented as a polyphonic ethnography that gives a voice to the social actors to understand their reality. As a result, their own experiences have enabled to identify: the scenarios for discrimination and social exclusion; the strategies they are coping with in order to build resilience and assimilate the cultural change within their adaptation process; the resignification of their cultural identity by starting with an open attitude towards otherness and interculturality, as symbolic processes in construction, which are necessary to resume the meaning of their lives. Finally, to understand higher education as a right and a path towards a real socio-cultural integration of young refugees and their families in Ecuador. |
