Sumario: Melasme is an aesthetic concern of the first order in a society where beauty prominently, both from a personal point of view as social, this highlights the absolute need for some effective therapies against these lesions affecting significantly to the quality of life of individuals. The most effective clearing agent, currently known, is hydroquinone; however, this active ingredient has become somewhat controversial, has been banned in Europe and the Orient and the ban is being studied in the United States. This has stimulated the search for alternative agents for inhibiting skin pigmentation such as the use of alpha hydroxy acids, retinoids, arbutin, plant extracts, etc. In this context, the objective of this research is focused on developing and determining the effectiveness of a cosmetic product made with arbutin and Pteria sterna (pearl shell) and compare it with another product made from only arbutin. As an indicator of clearance of facial skin melanin index measured using the Mexameter® MX18. The double-blind investigation was conducted with a group of 60 volunteer subjects between the ages of 25-65 years without sex differentiation, who the different formulations were applied, monitoring the treatment period lasted three months, measurements were performed in initial time and then every 15 days to verify the performance of cosmetic products depigmentation. With the cream of pearl shell depigmentation of 10% was obtained, the cream of arbutin reached depigmented spots melasma to an average of 16.0% and cream combination of shell nacre more arbutin managed depigmented 26.3%, which indicates that there is a synergistic effect between arbutin and mother of pearl. It could be an alternative to the use of hydroquinone causes many side effects for abusing its application to the skin.
