Sumario: The natural cosmetic has done that the man looks for new ingredients for the production of cosmetic lotions and support the characteristics of smell and aspects of the lotions. In addition, the Comunidad Andina de Naciones determined that the cosmetic companies remove parabens from his formulation and look for new natural substances that fulfill with the same preserving effect; it is so, the aim of this investigation is to make lotions using essential oil (0.4 %) and hydroalcoholic fluid extract (7.5 %, 10 % and 15 %) of Ocotea quixos (Lam.) Kosterm like substitutes of the parabens. To assess the preservative capacity of the natural extracts used in the cosmetic lotions, it was used the Challenge Test's method that uses strains of Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Pseudomona aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Candida albicans ATCC 10231 y Aspergillius brasiliensis ATCC 16404 and it was evaluated in four times (0, 7, 14 and 28 days) and the results of the microbial count were expressed in logarithms. Using statistical methods, it was determined that the lotions with hydroalcoholic fluid extract – essential oil (10 % - 0.4 % and 15 % - 0.4 %) and the lotion with only essential oil (0.4 %) as preservative, do not present significant difference in front of the positive control that was the lotion with phenova (0.8 %). Therefore, the mixture of hydroalcoholic fluid extract - essential oil or only the essential could be substitutes of the preservative synthetic ones.
