Sumario: In 1956, Ecuador started internally merchandising Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). This hydrocarbon would become a high demand product for both domestic and commercial use. Currently the Ecuadorian Government is looking to implement a new project based on the change of the production matrix for which it has proposed the elimination of the LPG subsidy and have it be replaced with electric energy. To minimize the impact on the population, due to the elimination of the subsidy for domestic use, the Ecuadorian Government is jointly promoting with the Electric Company, social programs to substitute gas based kitchens for electric based kitchens by subsidizing 80 KWH of electric energy, up to the year 2018. In order to reduce the impact on the middle and lower class, the State proposes to eliminate the LPG subsidy by the year 2017. The current investigation identifies the socioeconomic impact in the Quitumbe area due to the elimination of the LPG subsidy. For this study the houses and business of the area were taken into account. To execute this investigation, information will be gathered through the application of a survey / questionnaire that allows us to collect data, criteria and opinions on the population being studied. This investigation contains four chapters. In the first chapter the problems due to the elimination of the LPG subsidy will be analyzed, taking into account the concept of subsidy and types of subsidies that exist. The second chapter takes into account theories related to the issue of subsidies with an analysis of the problem and why the LPG subsidy is being eliminated. In the third chapter, a socioeconomic assessment on the elimination of the LPG subsidies is performed, by studying the different type of subsidies and the distribution of these in the State Budget. The advantages and disadvantages of the elimination of this subsidy are also compared. In the fourth chapter it has been determined that the elimination of this subsidy will have a greater effect on the middle and lower class because these social groups are the ones who mostly consume LPG for domestic use.
