Since the nineties, the growing rivalry among soccer teams in Quito (Ecuador) has triggered several kinds of violence inside and outside of arenas and sports fields. There are different factors that contribute to generate violent clashes between soccer fans. However, this research has been focused on studying one of them: the media, namely, the capital city’s newspapers.
The most important question behind this academic work aims to answer the question about whether the written press in Quito has influenced to change attitudes within social groups (soccer fans) leading to violence. In order to do so, it has been proposed to analyze some of the written press’ speeches as a way to know how large this influence has been.
According to the content analysis carried out on two newpapers, “El Comercio” and “Últimas Noticias”, it has been noticed that there is large amount of war expressions and other symbolic resources that have been used by journalists to exacerbate soccer fans. As a conclusion, this kind of language along with regionalism and team identities have helped to create a war imaginary around this sport. |
