The present ethnography has as main objective to describe the practices and perceptions that strengthen the relation of the inhabitants of the neighborhood El Guabo with the river Machángara. Research was carried out in the city of Quito, from November 2014 to April 2015. In the field work the concepts of ecological anthropology and the theory of practice developed mainly by the anthropologist Tim Ingold were applied. In order to fulfill this objective, the content was divided into three parts. In the first one, concepts such as habit and interagentivity are discussed, in order to explain the relations between the subject and nature, through five case studies that are developed in the El Guabo neighborhood, between people, animals and the Machángara River. While in the second part we work with the concept of perception, to describe the interpretations that the residents have about the river Machángara and its pollution. To achieve this, it is necessary to work with a methodology based on participant observation, anthropological interviews and tools such as triggers and community maps. The third part corresponds to the conclusions, which describes how the inhabitants of the El Guabo neighborhood coexist with the contamination of the Machángara river. The main contributions of this research are focused on the learning that residents of El Guabo neighborhood have acquired based on experience, which has allowed them to develop their practices and establish relationships, making it possible to live in adverse environmental conditions. |
