Sumario: The Rural Potable Water Program has been implemented for 50 years by the Government of Chile - assuming direct financial commitment since 1994 - which along with organized rural communities has been successful in providing potable water to these communities. Therefore, the subsidiary role of the State and the community management by locals has been the key element of this program. However, there is an institutional weakness and regulations that do not allow a better management of this program; hence, there are different challenges such as rural sanitation. For this reason, there is discussion over a draft law which seeks reforms and provides institutional and regulatory elements to the sector –incorporating sanitation– through the “Rural Sanitation Services”.
