With neoliberalism as dominant economic model over the last 30 years, the consumer behavior of most of Western and Middle Eastern societies which joined the world economy since the Asian revolution, have played an important role in the consumption of major natural resources, since they focused their initial development in the use and exportation of raw materials and goods of the primary sector. Because the idea of western progress settled, among other things, in the indiscriminate consumption of “ephemeral” goods, frantic pace of productivity and replacement of goods that go out of fashion as a consequence of programmed obsolescence, this has generated more pollution and environmental deterioration. In this sense, the article examines the necessity of using other models or ideals of life and progress to prevent the environmental and social damage generated by the exploitation of natural resources in Latin American countries during the last neoliberal period. From the postulates of Vattimo (1994) about the end of modernity, the downfall of the idea of western progress is discussed as well as the emergence of new ideals and lifestyles. Finally, they show the reasons which make necessary a change of model, calling on for a voluntary reduction of consumption and economic slowdown as alternative divorced from the idea of progress in the Western world, based on the ancient Cosmovision of Kichwa on good living or sumak kawsay. Keywords: No consumption, good living, economic slowdown |
