Based on the theory of resources and capacities, which seeks to identify thepotential of a business to establish competitive advantages, this article explores a new model of full-time engagement of potential successors for family businesses (fb): the iei (internal, external, inside) model. In this model, the potential successor must deliberately work full-time in the fb, then go out and find external experiences, and finally, return to the family business. This research explores the importance of the iei model in family businesses, with a case study of a medium-sized Colombian company. The results show that this model could be considered as another alternative for engaging descendants in family businesses, and produces some propositions which should be contrasted in subsequent research. |
