Sumario: This paper deals with the characterization of informal settlements in the city of João Pessoa, located in the state of Paraíba in the North-Eastern region of Brazil. Such settlements are environmentally fragile places, with poor conditions of infrastructure, sanitation and security, segregated from the formal city and, consequently, scoring low at quality of life indicators. The chaotic occupation patterns of those parts of the city directly affect the health of people as they are exposed to multiple risk situations. Therefore, it is necessary to produce studies that provide information for decision-makers who are to grant subsidies for urban interventions and management plans that seek the reduction of risks and have as their focus synergistic actions towards the preservation of life. With these aims, a study of urbanism and infrastructure was realized in the communities of Saturnino de Brito, Santa Emilia de Rodat and Renascer I, based on the methodology of the Ministry of Cities of Brazil’s Federal Government.
