Sumario: Writing is the basis for the construction and dissemination of knowledge in higher education, although all disciplines have particular ways of doingit. This article contextualizes reflection understudied educational movementin Colombia, showing its historical evolution, the conceptual underpinningit (cognitive approach and rhetoric)and the relationship with the situationin Colombia from the results of the investigation, Why reading and writing is for in universities of Colombia?,a contribution to the consolidationof the academic culture, with the participation of 17 universities. It discusses some of the results and concludes with some important challenges to be considered by the various bodies that make higher education.Transference to practiceThis article aims to provide guidance to researchers and academics whowant to delve into the development of methodology to enhance learning through reading and writing in college. Similarly, the reflection has a metainvestigación that is of interest tomanagers and academics interestedin enhancing the processes of reading and writing, since it has application ingenerating institutional or state policieson literacy in higher education institutions.
