Sumario: Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most painful and distressing diseases. Although its clinical and therapeutic characteristics have been well defined, it is still very difficult to control. Nicholas André was the first person to recognize what he called Tic Douleureux as a separate disease entity which was entirely different from other forms of craniofacial pain. Analyzing the historic bases regarding trigeminal neuralgia helps the pain clinician to have a better appreciation of the global concept of pain. The present article focuses on reviewing the process that led to the concept of Tic Douleureux.
