This paper discusses the theory on the imagination developed by the Sanskrit literary theoretician Rājaśekhara (10thce). In this context, previous eforts within the discipline are summarized underscoring the radical turning point it experienced towards the 9th century, when the ancient formalist model was displaced by a greater emphasis on the communication of universal emotions. It is thus argued that Rājaśekhara’s novel theory on the imagination rests not only upon an explicit adherence to such turning point, but also upon its extrapolation to the process of reception. Finally, the social dimension of such receptive imagination is suggested. |
