Second Life is perhaps today the most popular online simulated 3D environment, thanks to the possibilities of interaction between simulation and videogames and to the creation of collaborative social networks where any kind of knowledge may be shared. This article introduces the virtual platform Second Life as well as its potential as an educational tool that may be used for research and open publication in sciences with an emphasis on chemistry. It also describes some tools that come out from the use of Second Life when teaching chemistry, besides the growing interest and participation of different organizations, companies, and scientists in the fi eld of chemistry, what they offer in SL and how to place them in this virtual world. |
