This paper proposes a reflection on the dimensions of the Apollonian and the Dionysian, or the beautiful and the sublime, as categories related to the aesthetic experience, the spirit and life in general and that have expression in several artistic manifestations from architecture to music. In regards to the musical language it is considered the gradual incorporation of dissonance in Western music sound as an onset to the Dionysian and the sublime. Finally, it is formulated that we find the human need for expression of a mental and emotional universe complex and contradictory between restraint and overflow, between form and expression, between reason and emotion, as a source of Dionysian experience, and the emergence of the sublime in the arts dimension. |
