Sumario: One of the products obtained in the oil refining processes is naphtha, from which gasolines are obtained by mixing different streams of processes. Gasolines must comply with environmental regulations in terms of sulfur composition, and this is achieved through hydrotreating processes of naphtha in oil refineries; however, this activity decreases its octane rating, affecting the final product. To increase it, processes such as the isomerization of n-pentane and n-hexane (C5 / C6) are used. In this technical report, this process is studied with its most relevant characteristics, and the implementation of an isomerization process is proposed in the Cartagena Refinery: Ecopetrol SA. to increase the octane rating of light naphtha from hydrotreating. In the study, the different configurations of the isomerization units are presented, as well as the types of catalysts used in them, presenting their advantages in the operation. It is obtained by performing the simulation of an isomerization unit with deisopentation and double pass an increase of approximately 8 points in the octane number of the isomerized naphtha; offering a striking alternative to the refinery in terms of the economic benefits of the quality of its products and environmental by the implementation of environmentally responsible processes and products.
