This study aimed to examine the coping strategies used by children who have the mother or father admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). 30 children of both sexes participated, they answerd the- Demographic and Socio Sheet and Coping Strategies Inventory of Folkman and Lazarus (1985). The analysis of responses in the inventory took place in two stages: 1) counting the score of each participant, the items of each factor corresponding to the coping strategies. 2) calculation of Spearman correlation coefficients among the and some 66 issues of the inventory variables like: religion, age, education and filiation. There is a significant positive or negative correlation between these variables and some inventory items, but this is not enough to say that there is correlation between the variables specific and strategies. Although participants used all strategies, those that predominated were: positive reappraisal (97%), social support (93%) and problem solving (77%). These results corroborate previous studies' findings on this topic and can support a more effective practice of the health team whit this population. Keywords: Intensive Care Unit; family; disease; stress; coping strategies. |
