Sumario: The design and construction of a solar sti ll is a project born from the social point of view, considering that drinking water does not reach many rural populations of Ecuador and the families of these villages used water from springs or rivers that possibly contain elements harmful to health, this project is developed in order to check whether a distillation system provided by solar energy provides vital liquid suitable for human consumption, this will generally describes the stages carried out in this type of system, such as evaporation and conden sation, studied from thermodynamic standpoint. Solar energy is a renewable source, plays a major role in the heating system produces a greenhouse effect inside the distiller, at rates of energy transfer that involves the study analyzes such as radiation, c onvection and conduction. For the system design parameters such as intensity of solar energy, which is n ecessary to calculate the angles of inclination, specify the coordinates at which to testing and finally to determine the values of both radiation on a horizontal surface are evaluated as in an inclined, with these values or the calculation of lost hea t released by the system is initiated. The design is important to perform an energy balance in major parts of the solar still (cover and drip tray), this calculation also applies in the water, then this analysis to determine the heat absorbed and lost over all system finally you get to determine the efficiency of the system and the production of distilled water per day. An analysis of system operation (solar still), comparing theoretical data with real data have been collected for four days of operation of t he distiller with variables such as temperature, radiation, time, initial volume and final volume is made, also makes a comparison of data with laboratory analysis of water samples before and after the distillation process to check whether the water is sui table or not for human consumption
