This article analyzes the discourse on the gender message about masculinities that the show El Combo Amarillo spreads. This is a national television program that develops on a taxi cooperative in Guayaquil. It bases on stereotypes and, in a certain way, it reaffirms these behaviors in Ecuadorian society. This paper is based in the dialogs of one of the episodes from the tv show.
The discourse analysis founds on the chapter Marcelo: macho o dudoso which argument is explained in the following pages. This chapter was chosen because it has a lot of situations about gender issues, specifically gender violence from men to men where their authority is invalidated by not fulfilling the stereotype of the gender role. Where violence doesn’t just comes from men, but also from women to the man who doesn’t act like the dominant masculinity dictates.
The paper approaches the problematic of dominant masculinity in a patriarchal society that inferiorizes men who do not accomplish the status of "macho" and how this issue is reflected in the show El Combo Amarillo. In addition, the categories around the whole topic are presented in the article. |
