Sangolquí is a place that since the pre-colonial has been building its own identity. It
has become a tourist attraction visited by its landscapes, tradition and culture. In this
process the corn has played an important role. This product with the course of
history, has transcended its nutritional value, to become a symbol of cultural identity.
Even has come to have their own monument called "El choclo". This grain has been
becoming an object of homage and celebration by the people of this area. The
sangolquileños, valuing the ancestral knowledge accumulated by generations. One is
the gastronomy, around which have been formed as the party rituals chagra.
Sangolquí previously was considered the breadbasket of Quito. Currently corn
production is decreased due to the use of land for housing construction, but the
symbolic aspect is maintained. Corn Feasts are held annually. This and gastronomy
are fundamental aspects of their cultural identity. In this article the evolution of the
cultural identity of Sangolquí around the corn from the results of historical research
and fieldwork with older people the place is presented. |
