Sumario: As in Quito D.M. industrial activities advance, the negative impacts on nearby water bodies are more significant, reflecting a deterioration in the quality of the environment. Wastewaters tend to be a big problem when they are discharged to riverbeds close to surrounding communities. Therefore, treatment systems are now more required to prevent damage to water bodies and soil. Biological treatments are an option for the treatment of wastewater with high loads of biodegradable matter; fixed cultures (trickling filters and biodisk plants) treatment systems are highly efficient alternative, because they degrade organic matter via the metabolism of aquatic microbiota in the presence of oxygen. For the realization of this thesis, a composite sampling was taken for sixteen times, with a confidence level of 95%, to then characterize the effluents from a dairy and confectionery industry. Characterization of the physical and chemical parameters could determine the feasibility of the purification of effluent by activated sludge systems and in turn, present alternatives to removal. The application of biological treatment is closely linked with the amount of organic matter that is present in the wastewater, is for this reason that is required to establish the relationship between COD/BOD5 to determine the most appropriate design.
