The aim of this paper is to design a methodology of observation press for informational genres that is the way to implement a media watchdog.
As will be seen below, the methodological recommendations proposed here can be applied to any print media. However, they were taken as reference daily El Comercio and daily El Telégrafo, because of its geographical proximity to conduct interviews with directors and meet with greater proximity journalistic work they do, and also by the influence of these newspapers in Quito, city which could be implemented observatory media with features that arise in this research.
The first chapter of this study examines the relationship between media and society. The origin and the citizen role that media observatories are also described.
The second chapter presents the Latin American context in general and Ecuador in particular with regard to the development of media observatories. It presents the criteria of the three human groups consulted: a) professionals and experts in communication, journalism and media observatories; b) readers of daily El Comercio and daily El Telégrafo and c) the directors of these two media.
The third and final chapter presents a methodology for observing press information genres, and further detailed characterization media observatory that should be implemented this methodology.
