The present investigation estimated the environmental impact of the agroecological
agro-food system of the potato (Solanum Tuberosum) in its agricultural phase in
comparison with conventional management, through life cycle analysis (LCA) in the
parishes La Esperanza and Tabacundo of the Pedro Moncayo canton; with the purpose
of providing information that allows visibility through the use of two environmental
indicators, which agri-food system is sustainable.
For the estimation of the environmental impact, the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of
the entire agricultural phase was included, from which an inventory of inputs and
outputs was prepared to calculate of Carbon Footprint (CF) indicator according to the
guidelines of the IPCC 2006 and the guidelines of the Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
protocol. On the other hand, the Water Footprint (WF) calculation was completed with
the manuals of the Water Footprint Network (WFN) and the FAO, in addition
CROPWAT 8.0 and Excel software were used. Finally, through physical-chemical soil
parameters were analyzed, irrigation and product quality were determined.
The results of CF and WF for the agroecological system (AS) are 4.7 kgCO2eq/kg
and 154.60 m3/ton respectively vs 14.15 kgCO2eq/kg and 627.03 m3/ton for the
conventional system (CS), the latter being the model that generates the greatest
environmental impacts.
The present study we were seeking for the answer to how many kgCO2eq/kg of
product are emitted into the atmosphere and how many m3/ton of water are consumed
by potato production in two agri-food systems. |
