Aggression, since it is related to emotional development, exists before personality is integrated, because it is part of the first activities of the baby, which shape them. According to Winnicott, it is evidenced in several phases of the development of the self; moreover, at the same time, aggression differentiates Me from Not-Me, by integrating the personality of a real being.
From a violent actions perspective, aggression can be defined as those aggressive behaviors that fuel an aggressor-victim cycle. This allows violence to be categorized as: physical, verbal, psychological, and social.
The subjective configuration of a child identifies their mother as the sole person able to respond to the primary needs of the baby, and after that, to the ego ones; that is, she builds the foundations of the mental health of this human being during childhood.
A mother who is good enough and knows how to recognize her mistakes is a mother who gradually decreases her intervention as the child's ability to adapt to reality increases. Maternal mistakes allow differentiation or separation, and, the latter builds, at the same time, the symbolic space.
Thus, the individual forms both its true and its false self. The true self expresses authenticity and vitality; it is always totally or partially hidden and is the only one with the ability to create and to be felt as real. The false self is operative, functional and adaptive. It is a defense structure.
In short, it is during childhood that the foundations of the personality of an individual are structured; therefore, therapeutic space is experienced as a second chance, by means of which those failures, that took place during the development of the child, can be modified. |
