This article studies the institutional characteristics of the Guardia Colombiana which were the armed forces during the time-period of the Constitution of the Estados Unidos de Colombia (1863-1885). This armed force was created with a "civil'' character to avoid the abuses of the troops. But it conserved certain key elements such as hierarchy of rank, uniforms, military instruction, internal structure, etc. I discuss the possibility that the Guardia Colombiana can be located within the so-called "pre-professional armed forces". It did not, how¬ever, form the base of the modern national army. |
