Sumario: Professional musicians in Colombia have an increasingly reduced space; the new graduates face a restricted professional field, commonly having to exercise their profession in different ways from those promised by their education, which is based in a model –conservatory– foreign to their territory and distant from their symbolic place. In this way, the present study bases in Cornelius Castoriadis’ theory of social imaginary as an axiomatic starting point that allow us to glimpse the forms, significations and representations that exists around academic music and the professional musician as a subject of this, thus pretending to understand, from a descriptive and interpretative study, the imaginaries in two groups: those who are inside de conservatory model and those who deviate from it, therefore perceiving in their discourse links and tensions the social role that is attributed to academic music and the professional musician. This study is about trying to understand a contemporary social phenomenon that accounts the particularities of a given context –Santiago de Cali city– but that at the same time is referent subject knowledge to reflect about professional music education in Colombia.
