The subject of this investigation refers to the subjective perceptions of aging,
when older adults face a number of biopsychosocial changes, typical of this period of
their life.
The subjective perception of aging occurs as a result of the experiences and
senses built by each person throughout their life.
These perceptions have been expressed by a group of older adults, by conducting
with them two focus groups. Eight people voluntarily agreed to participate in each one.
Subjective perceptions of aging highlight the presence of deficits in older adults,
especially physical, but at the same time mostly emphasize the appreciation of
themselves as useful human beings intended to be active participants with others and
with their selves. They recognize that their current condition is directly related to their
own life stories and that experienced changes have been faced sometimes with pain,
but also with the decision to adapt to them. They point out that their goal is to stay
active, with autonomy, independence, and taking care of their health. They emphasize
the importance of maintaining harmonious relations with their family, keeping their
health care and being an active part of a group of older adults; which allows them to
preserve their emotional and physical stability. |
