Sumario: Is gender discrimination present in the sports section of national newspaper? This research analyzes how the information published in the newspapers El Comercio and El Telégrafo, to determine whether sportswomen have the same coverage and are given the same importance as sportsmen. In order achieve this, the study of the culture along with its fields of manifestations and representations was needed; of communication and its power relationships; of media and how versions of reality are built, and finally of media education. The analysis is based on structuralism`s postulates, by means of denotative and connotative reading of the images published on both newspaper. It is intended that semiology will allow the reading of social situations in this problematic to understand the reality from the images and from the messages. Visual communication does not only emit informative or esthetic messages but it also creates culture, identity, imaginaries and stereotypes. In journalism, specially, one is able to place a fact in the spotlight, which means visualizing it for society. In the last section, a photo essay with the profiles of 10 national athletes is presented as communicative product, taking into consideration the parameters needed to reach gender equality when dealing with information. Likewise, the protagonists opinion about gender discrimination, whether they have been witnesses or victims of it in their profession, and whether they fell well represented by national media, is exposed.
